King Fisher Beach

King Fisher Beach in Port O’Connor, Texas, is a great spot for a day in the sun. This beach park looking out over southern Matagorda Bay is a preferred gathering point for families, groups of friends and the whole community, as well as those seeking a peaceful moment near the water.

Fishermen, young and old, can be found at King Fisher Beach pier during peak times of the day or under the lights at night. Many people enjoy a walk along the coast for leisure, beachcombing or watching the shorebirds. King Fisher Beach is also a popular place along routes of local and visiting runners. Kayakers can be spotted launching from this shallow beach, perhaps off on a fishing excursion or testing the waters as a beginning paddler. Families and friends often meet at one of the ten covered picnic tables to enjoy a sunny day together. Barbecue grills are available at each table, as well as a trash can for convenience.

The water is fairly shallow along King Fisher Beach, so this destination is enjoyed by families with children who can be seen making sandcastles and splashing along the shoreline, playing on the swings near the pier or rolling around on the slab. Many beach visitors appreciate additional safety since motorized vehicles are not allowed on the beach. Near the intersection of Park and Monroe, there are other features—a pavilion for larger gatherings, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, an outdoor shower for rinsing off, and restrooms.

Several annual events are held at King Fisher Beach throughout the year. Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday is something to behold. Port O’Connor Sports Association hosts their POCSA Annual Cook-Off on Memorial Day weekend, as local and regional teams compete in making barbecue, gumbo, chili and beans. A free Kids’ Fishing Tournament is also held that morning, hosted by the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce. Every year, the 4th of July Fireworks Display is truly an event to remember. In August, POCIFT holds a parade with decorated golf carts and festive celebration. A new event in early October is the POC Style 5K and Kids’ Dolphin Run K. King Fisher Beach is also a site for the Texas Adopt-A-Beach clean up twice a year, in April and September.
