Eighteen-year-old Ryan Smith of Portland, Texas reeled in the winning marlin at the annual Poco Bueno Invitational Fishing Tournament. The fish, brought in by the Dona Ken, weighed in at 493.5 pounds with a length of 112 inches.
According to the Victoria Advocate, this year was the first time Smith fished the Poco Bueno. With this catch, Smith earned an undetermined share of a purse estimated over $900,000.
The Dona Ken was captained by Ken Porter of Seadrift, Texas.
The second place finisher was brought in on Friday night by Hydrocarbon. Their marlin weighed 446.5 pounds and measured 105 inches, and was the first fish in. For the first time in Poco Bueno history, two fish weighed the same. Another marlin from the boat Cuz We Can brought in a 446.5 pound marlin, measuring 104 inches in length. According to tournament rules, if the weight is the same, the tie is settled according to length.
