Thousands gathered throughout Port O’Connor, with most at Kingfisher Beach, to watch the annual Port O’Connor Fireworks display. Each year, the businesses and citizens of Port O’Connor raise money to put on one of the finest displays on the Texas Gulf Coast.
A stream of vehicles came into Port O’Connor all day on Saturday, bringing celebrants from all over South Texas. The annual event has built quite a reputation as one of the finer exhibitions. The fireworks celebration is usually held on a weekend adjacent to the 4th of July.
Don Haynes, a local businessman and licensed pyrotechnician, manages the purchase, arrangement and activation of the fireworks. Don and his crew stage the fireworks at the end of the pier at Kingfisher Beach.
Vendors were on hand selling food, apparel and toys. Many beach-goers brought their own food and drink. Before dark, several people joined pick-up volleyball and basketball games on the park courts.
The fireworks celebration is coordinated each year by the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce. 2012 marks the 44th consecutive year of this unique and well-received event.
While donations for the fireworks were substantial this year, the fundraising effort is still short of the necessary money to cover the fireworks, security and other costs. If you’re interested in making any donation, please contact Bill Tigrett at 361-983-2671.
